Lester is woken by pounding on his door as Nicor tells him that Mr. Jorgennson wants the half-orc and Fulton at the offices right now. Lester (and Lilly) follow the boy to Fulton’s home to collect the noble, and they send the tiefling off to retrieve Kent and Embers as well.
When the group arrives at the Inquisitive, they find the editor waiting with a senior priest from the Silver Flame, a dwarf named Grevor. The cleric explains that there have been reports of strange magical happening in the Towerfall district over the past several weeks, which appear to coincide with the location of the site of the Martyrdom of Lady Faela, a Silver Flame follower who sacrificed herself on the day of Crystalfall. Another Silver Flame priest, Kaeron, is going to investigate, and Jorgennson wants the Inquisitive to have reporters on scene for the event.
Kaeron meets up with the group in the city above Towerfall, and is initially very unhappy with having ‘press’ along for the ride. Fulton’s charm warms her to the idea of spreading the tale of Faela’s sacrifice to the greater world. The group’s first task is to find an artist in Towerfall, a gnome woman named Blanksy, who is purported to know about the location of the Martyrdom and strange happenings.
Arriving at the artist’s camp, the team immediately stumbles upon a group of reavers who are attacking Blanksy’s home. Working with Kaeron, they defeat the raging attackers before Blanksy is harmed, but have difficulty communicating with her. She appears to be speaking to someone they can’t see, and during the discussion, a ghost manifests and attacks. The spectre succeeds in possessing Kent, forcing the team to knock the half-elf unconscious in order to defeat the ghost. Freed from the spectre’s influence, Blanksy is able to tell Kaeron how to get to the Martyr’s body, but warns that people bearing the mark of The Dragon Below, have already been investigating the site.
Pressing on, the group enters a roughly circular room filled with debris from the fallen tower. As they cross the room, forcefields arise at the entrances and a vortex of wind begins spinning the debris about, buffeting the group. They take shelter in some non-flying debris, but it is not enough to completely protect them. Kent braves the wind to investigate further, realizing that small dragonshards embedded in the walls are the source of power for the trap. A combination of arcane/religious knowledge and brute force allows them to deactivate the trap, but not before they take more damage.
Further along, the team encounters a quartet of frightening demons who attack immediately. Kent is momentarily paralyzed with fear, but recovers quickly, while Fulton’s terror roots him in place for the entire battle. A shadowy demon creeps up on the noble and takes advantage of the terror to attack him, but does not manage to take down Fulton.
After defeating the first set of demons, the group comes across a vrock that is screaming at a human woman to “move to the seal, now!”. They launch their attack, and four dretches appear to help the vrock, several of them unsuccessfully attempting to push Kent and Embers into the glowing silver seal at the end of the room. Although the vrock is a formidable opponent, they manage to kill the demons without too much difficulty.
After discussing the seal, and realizing it is designed to keep evil creatures out, Kent steps into it, both opening the barrier and infusing himself with energizing silvery light. When they pass through the door beyond, they find a glowing field of silvery energy barely holding back dark demonic energy, surrounding a bier with a woman’s body upon it. Inside the demonic cloud, maw demons swarm, more emerging from some unseen portal every moment. Kent unexpectedly passes through the barrier when it is pushed back by the demonic energy, and the rest of the group leaps forward to confront the demons. The half-elf quickly realizes he can infuse the woman’s body with the silver energy he carries, but the same power is also making him the exclusive target of the demons. As the rest of the group frantically tries to contain the monsters, Kent collapses just before he can transfer the silver energy completely. Fortunately, Fulton is able to heal his friend and when Kent completely the transfer, the silvery barrier retracts, destroying the demons and sealing the rift from which they were emerging.
The ethereal visage of the martyr they were search for appears to Kent, thanking him for reinforcing the barrier to prevent the evils of Khyber from coming through. She implores him to take the items of power from her body and use them to defeat evil wherever he may find it. A search of her remains finds a javelin of light, ring of mind shielding, and a wand of secrets. Once they return to the upper city, Grevor also rewards them with a ruby of the war mage and 500 gold each, promising to devote Silver Flame resources to protecting the martyr’s seal below.
In their absence, Olive has decided to return to her work at the university since it is apparent that Carric was not taken by the Swords of Liberty after all. While Stab plans to stay at Fulton’s home indefinitely, the noble’s silver tongue convinces the goblin that his expertise and prowess are needed in the wider world.
